One of my mentors used to tell me, “I don’t like to spend too much time hanging out and chatting with people because it is easy to end up saying ungodly things.” While not everyone would agree with this remark, but there is certainly some truth in it. Haven’t we all done this before – amidst extended chatting and jesting, we ended up saying ungodly things and we engaged in gossip? Paul told Timothy, “avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.” (2Tim.2:16) Controlling the tongue is a discipline we all need. It’s easier for some and extremely difficult for others. What we need to constantly remind ourselves of is that our tongue has the ability and the power to say words that hurt or words that heal. Prov.18:21 tells us, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” And James reminds us, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.” (Jas.3:9) Godless chatter not only hurts people, it eventually hurts ourselves – we become more and more ungodly. As you walk with God today, may the joy and peace of the Lord fill your heart. May your mind dwell on things that are good, pleasant and godly so that you will not engage in godless chatter, instead you will speak words that heal. Have a great day!

Today’s Bible text “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.” (2Tim.2:16)
