Take Up the Cross and Follow Me

A child who thinks only of what she can get out of her father, an employee or a servant who thinks only of what he can gain from his employer, a citizen of a country who only thinks of what the government can and should do for him is no different from a Christian who only thinks of what he or she can get from God and out of a relationship with God. The worrying truth is that there are probably more Christians like that than we can imagine. Discipleship is costly, not comfy.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Matthew 16:24)

Bob Dylan cautions us in his song, When You Gonna Wake Up …..

Do you ever wonder just what God requires?
You think He’s just an errand boy
to satisfy your wandering desires.
When you gonna wake up,
when you gonna wake up
When you gonna wake up
and strengthen the things that remain?
