We call Jesus our Wonderful Counselor – the One who is full of wonder and wisdom to guide and instruct us on how we should live. We sing passionately about it during the Christmas season but do we listen to His counsel? Do we live our lives according to His wisdom, counsel and instruction? Or do we just prefer to do things our way?
Honestly, there have been many occasions when I just prefer to do things my way. It is more fun, more convenient and more satisfying. But that means I have turned away from God during those times and delighted in what I should not delight in. I have ignored His counsel and that is not a good place to be in. I regret that.
When we sing or say that Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor, we really should obey His counsel and walk in His ways. His ways are always better but we choose our own way because we do not like discipline, obedience and submission.
We like to be free, but we do not realise that our idea of freedom only leads to bondage to sin. On the other hand, the freedom that the Lord gives us is freedom from sin through obedience to Him, not freedom to live in self-indulgence.
So what do we prefer? Freedom to do what we want leading to being enslaved by sin OR freedom from sin by becoming a slave to Christ? As you decide, do bear in mind that Christ is a Master who is gentle and lowly at heart, loving and kind, gracious and merciful. On the hand, sin is a master who seeks to steal, kill and destroy.
Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
