“See what great love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called children of God!”, John tells us in 1Jn.3:1.
God knows each of us by name and He knows the number of hair on our heads. We realise how great His love is especially when we remember that we are dust and our lives are like a vapour that appears for a little while and then vanishes. We are really small, sinful and insignificant, yet our Heavenly Father has lavished His love upon us!
Whatever you are going through today, however you may feel about what’s going on in your life, know this – the Father has lavished His great love upon you. Don’t let the devil tell you otherwise.
The word lavish is “didomi” in Greek and it means “of one’s own accord to give one something, to his advantage”. What the Lord has done is that He gave us His Son Jesus of His own accord for our benefit and advantage!
Without Jesus and what He did on the cross, we will all die in our sins, not temporarily but eternally in the lake of fire. What that means is suffering the pain of death continually forever – not just suffer pain for a brief time and pass out, but feeling the pain all the time, for all eternity. That’s horrible isn’t it?
But thanks be to God for He gave us His Son who came and died for our sins, paid the penalty for sin on our behalf and rose from the dead demonstrating His victory over sin and death! And He offers eternal life to all who believe in Him and follow Him. That’s how great the Father’s love is!
What we must also remember is that salvation involves a gift and a shift. In 1Jn.3:3, John tells us, “All who have this hope in him [Christ] purify themselves, just as he [Christ] is pure.”
John tells us that we purify ourselves just as Christ is pure. Growing in holiness is not just the work of the Holy Spirit who lives in us, it requires that we intentionally make every effort to live holy lives in cooperation with the Holy Spirit and with His help.
So let’s encourage one another with these words, remembering the amazing love of the Father that has been lavished upon us – knowing that we are loved by Him who also calls us to purify ourselves because He is pure and holy.
“1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” – 1 John 3:1-3
