On spiritual warfare – too many amongst us know too little about it! That’s why there are many casualties – bad things happen, hit us and hurt people we love and we don’t even know why. I have seen such situations many times – when bad things happen in and to a family. Then, when we probe further, we find a few clues. First, their walk with God has been compromised for long periods of time. We are very strange people, when human relationships we care about break down, we do our utmost to make things right as quickly as possible. But when our relationship with God breaks down, even when we are aware of it, we seem to drag our feet and take forever to get things right with God. Why? Because the world is too attractive, personal enjoyment and happiness feel too good. So we stop growing in the Lord and studying His Word, we stop committing to the purposes of God and we take a casual attitude towards going to church and getting involved in ministry or not go to church at all. Second, they have exposed themselves to unholy and demonic things. They fill their minds with secular philosophies perpetuated by films, theatre, musicals, TV, music (from classical to heavy metal), etc. When a person’s mind is full of secular ideas, that person becomes secular. Unwittingly, many are also exposed to demonic things. Halloween, a special festivity of the devil, is just around the corner. I saw a couple of houses along Bowmont Gardens yesterday decorated with Halloween elements – so sad, they have no clue what they are inviting into their homes and what evil spirits would do to their loved ones. Won’t be surprised that even Christians celebrate Halloween in some way. And there are a lot more things through which demonic attacks come – books (both fiction and non-fiction) including “innocent” ones intended for children to read, magazines, music, theatre, films, etc. They are pervasive! Third, they have not learned or have not been taught how to fight spiritual battles. We may do a lot of intensive or inductive Bible studies, we may know a lot about OT or NT backgrounds and contexts of Bible passages, spend a lot of time worshipping, support each other sacrificially, etc. That’s all good, don’t throw them out, but if we do not know how to engage in THE spiritual warfare that is ongoing (yes it’s already started, not something that is starting in the future), then we will become casualties of war. “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (1Pet.5:8)
Ps.1:1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD , and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
Rom.12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.
1Pet.5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
